Research Field Assistant - EABL

Reports To: Research & Liaison Manager - EA
Context/Scope:
East African Maltings Limited (EAML) has the strategic role of providing competitively priced brewing raw materials to meet EABL supply requirements. Barley remains the principle raw material used in the manufacture of beer. However local supply of malting barley has been on the decline mainly because of competition from other crops for suitable land and lack of suitable varieties that could deliver better yields and quality. There is therefore need to develop strategies that will ensure continuous supply of new improved barley varieties and also identify other sources of brewing raw materials.
East African Maltings intends to support EABL’s strategic activities and create competitive   advantage for the EABL group within Eastern African Region on raw materials. While barley will remain the principle raw material for brewing, EAML has established a footprint in the region to source for white sorghum as an alternative raw material for brewing to ensure adequate supply to EABL.

Market Complexity:
Under the liberalized economy, there is high competition for good farms and farmers in traditional barley growing areas. EAML has therefore embarked on an aggressive R&D program that will address issues related to variety improvement, quality, pest and diseases to improve yields and maximize on use of the limited land available for barley production.

EAML has also embarked on a local development program for sorghum, which is traditionally grown in semi-arid areas as an alternative cereal to barley. The company intends to source for sorghum in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda through recruitment of both large and small-scale farmers (>4000 farmers). The company therefore requires to continuously monitor crop development to ensure supply.  A sound surveillance and extension service is therefore required to avoid shortage supply.
There are very few white sorghum varieties in the region. The company is therefore required to continuously source for and evaluate new high yielding sorghum varieties with superior brewing qualities.
